The Effect of Paper Arts on Occupational Participation of a Client With Chronic Schizoaffective Disorder: A Case Study

Abstract
Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of paper arts on occupational participation of a client with chronic schizoaffective disorder.

Methods: The client was a female with chronic schizoaffective disorder. The intervention was provided five times a week for three weeks. The Canadian Occupational Performance Measure(COPM) was utilized to set up the goals and the client was evaluated with Hand Function Test and Mini-Mental State Examination(MMSE-K) for inclusion criteria. The Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale(SDS), Beck Anxiety Index(BAI), and Self Esteem Scale(SES) were administered for psychological changes. The Comprehensive Occupational Therapy Evaluation Scale(COTE scale) was used to detect the attitudinal changes. The reassessment was conducted after the intervention.

Results: The client¡¯s COPM performance score increased by 4.75, and satisfaction score increased by 4. The score of Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale(SDS) decreased from 55 to 38, Beck Anxiety Index score decreased from 12 to 8, and Self Esteem Scale(SES)score increased from 23 to 36. The COTE scale changed from 14 to 8 reflecting positive attitude.

Conclusion: This study demonstrated that the paper arts had an effect on occupational participation of the client with chronic schizoaffective disorder. Therefore, occupational therapists should consider a various paper arts to promote occupational participation of the clients with chronic schizoaffective disorder for social adaptation.
